Masters Thesis

DJ Minx. Photo by James M. Rotz.

I organized a one day conference on Detroit electronic music called "Roots of Techno: Black DJs and the Detroit Scene" at Indiana University, October 21, 2006. This conference, in conjunction with the thesis that is available below, fulfilled the requirements for my Master's degree in ethnomusicology at Indiana University.

If I wrote this piece today at the end of 2010, it would read very differently. My ideas have changed a bit. But it's still useful to me, and maybe it will be to you.

The original file contained high quality photographs of all of the DJs from Detroit who participated in the conference. The photographs were of Rick Wilhite, DJ Minx, Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman, Mike Clark and Terrence Parker playing music during Friday and Saturday night of the conference weekend at a local club in Bloomington, IN called Second Story. I removed the photos to make the file an appropriate size to deal with on this blog. The descriptions of each photograph remain in the document.
